6 Things Children Gain From Martial Arts

Building Strength

At JMA Martial Arts, we create programs to help our members develop strong bodies, fine-tuned motor skills, and physical coordination. We will develop your child’s cardiovascular system and muscular strength and will create a general kind of body awareness that can only be gained from a whole-body method of martial arts training. Training with JMA Martial Arts will help your child be more coordinated, less susceptible to injuries, and more aware of their body and how to use it correctly.

Self Motivation

Children grow by learning to do things for themselves, and at JMA Martial Arts, we love to see our students putting their drink bottles on the shelf, remembering to take them home, learning to tie their own belts and helping other students. We aim to teach students to be self-motivated, practice makes progress, and rewards come with focussed effort. These are all the small steps to a much larger picture; Independence helps grow confidence and strength of character.

Happy Mindset

Effective communication is an important key to living happy lives. At JMA we pride ourselves on demonstrating positive communication, manners and thoughtfulness. We encourage our students to explore their emotions and help them to verbalise how they are feeling. Anger and frustration can often be a mask for fear and anxiety. Helping a student identify if they are feeling anxious, confused or even fearful about a particular situation can be a hugely effective way of empowering kids to deal with their emotions.

Better Performance At School

Research shows that students regularly training in martial arts perform better at school and are more likely to raise their hand in class if they do not understand and are more engaged in classroom activities! Having strong mentors in a positive training environment can also have a huge impact on your child’s ability to adjust to the social pressures of life, not to mention the influence a good role model has on steering students away from negative influences.

Community Spirit

The ethos of Taekwondo is being part of something bigger than the individual. A black belt is not just about the skills and behaviours you learn in the dojang. It is how you apply them in all aspects of your life. It is with this in mind that we encourage our students to demonstrate community mindedness at each belt level. From small gestures such as random acts of kindness from our Little Tigers to large scale community projects from our junior and senior Black Belts. Acts of kindness, environmental education and leadership programs are all part of a JMA Students development and grading syllabus.

Confidence Soars

Nothing can take the place of the security in knowing that your child can defend themselves should the need ever arise…and your own child’s self-confidence in knowing this themselves is immense. “People who continue to practice martial arts for prolonged periods are different from the general populace in these ways: they have a lower level of anxiety; an increased sense of responsibility; they are less likely to be radical; they have an increased level of self-esteem; and they are more socially intelligent.” (Source – Psychology Today, May 1985.)

JMA is a beautiful community of families and friends. Our daughter began Little Tigers age 3 and has learnt valuable life skills, enjoys showing her physical skills and collecting tags which represent her achievements at home and in class. Thank you James and all the instructors for your commitment, kindness and patience to the children.

We enrolled our 12 year old in the kick boxing programme, and it's been the best decision we've ever made. James is phenomenal, he seems to have eyes everywhere! Even though it's a group setting, he manages to give each child personalised attention. Our son looks forward to every class, and we're thrilled that he has such an inspiring role model !

Excellent place if you're considering enrolling your child into Martial arts. James, who is the head coach and owner, is AMAZING with the kids. His teaching skills are first class with every single one of his students. Not only can he teach an entire group, he individualises each child and their needs perfectly. Being young himself, James earns the respect of his students and engages with them in a vibrant, fun and inclusive manner. The children quickly learn respect, confidence, integrity and most importantly self defence. We are sad to be moving away from the area and would have stayed if we could have. My daughters confidence has increased tenfold after only a few months with James and his team at JMA.I would recommend JMA Alkimos to anyone and everyone able to give it a go.

Having not come from a martial arts background myself, I was unsure what to expect from enrolling my child into JMA.Three months later, with the first grading completed, I'm happy to say this was a great decision. The team at JMA Alkimos are super-friendly, engaging with the kids, and the benefits are clear.Drills are not just kicking & punching, but listening, respect, discipline & stranger awareness - and this alone makes it worth giving it a go.The facility is small, but the class times and sizes are catered to making it a comfortable experience for all involved.Really happy that we made this decision, and looking forward to continuing with JMA in the future!

We signed our 5 year old and 8 year old up, and they absolutely love it. Mr Duncan has a natural ability to teach kids of all ages, and they really look up to him and listen. Mr Duncan and all the trainers are great and show genuine interest in teaching with impressive patience with the younger ones!! The centre is clean and tidy and well run. I've also attended an adult class, which was good fun. We look forward to seeing where the kids will go and feel we are in the best hands. Would most definitely recommend.
